Monsters and Memories Shadow Knight in Shroud of the Avatar
A dark tank that drains life, bends souls and adapts per kill. How to rebuild the M&M Shadow Knight in Shroud of the Avatar: schools, deck and specialization.
This post is for players who tanked as a Shadow Knight in Monsters & Memories and want the same job in SotA. It is part of every Monsters & Memories class in Shroud of the Avatar. If SotA is new to you, read the character creation guide and the deck building guide first.
SotA has no classes. It has 21 skill schools and two specialization slots, and what players call a class is a deck plus a specialization pair, all of it changeable later. See the classes explainer.
What the Shadow Knight is in Monsters & Memories
The Shadow Knight is the dark knight of Monsters & Memories: a front-line fighter that drains life and strength from its victims and uses those drains to stay standing in a style that favors offense over defense. A planned Profane Study system will turn its monster hunting into new power once it ships. Six races can play one: Deep Dwarf, Deep Elf, Goblin, Human, Ogre and Troll.
The official deep dive pulls the class away from the Necromancer. Souls and corruption replace undead reanimation: the three shared pet lines become one Soul Servant, summoned in four level-scaling ranks with a Soul Remnant reagent you siphon from enemies rather than buy.
Damage
Shadow Strike: basic attack; extends any of your Shadows damage-over-time spells on the target by 6 seconds.
Siphoning Slash: stronger attack that heals you for 50 % of its damage; landing it in the last 10 % of an enemy's life siphons a soul remnant for your pet. Shares a cooldown with Reave.
Reave: two-handed attack with a short wind-up and a hard hit.
Soulrend: fast, short-range lifetap.
Grip of Agony: direct damage with a Stamina scaling part; heals you for half its damage while an Unholy Pact is up.
Palpitation: damage over time that ramps up over four ticks, with an Agility debuff.
Smothering Shadows: the Shadows damage-over-time line; faster cast, shorter duration.
Control
Goading Bash: shield interrupt; targets you block for a short time afterward give bonus threat. Shares a cooldown with Kick.
Kick: interrupt without a shield, with a shorter lockout than Goading Bash.
Grip of Shadow: pulls an enemy to you from 20 m and interrupts its cast.
Theft of Vigor: drains Strength and Stamina from the target to you.
Defense
Aura of the Unholy: group Holy resistance, more threat and Parry chance for you; below 25 % health it calls an Unholy Pact that cuts incoming damage, adds healing to Soulrend and gives Grip of Agony its lifesteal.
Aura of Vampirism: each group member gets a chance to cast a lifedrain on a melee hit.
Lord of Shadows: self buff for Intelligence, Armor Class, Hit Points and Mana Regeneration.
Holy Resistance and Cold Resistance: self-only buffs.
Sacrificial Barrier and Wreath of Souls: sacrifice the pet for a barrier, or for a wreath of souls that damages anyone who attacks you.
Utility
Soul Servant: the pet, four ranks, a bit behind a dedicated pet class.
Kept with no new text: Spirit Break, Terror in the Shadows, Fear, Fear the Dead, Lull the Dead, Repel the Dead, Unholy Bulwark, Feign Death, Dark Embrace, Summon Companion, Invisibility versus Undead, Polar Alignment: North, Locate Corpse and Summon Corpse.
The Shroud of the Avatar translation
The Shadow Knight maps onto the Tank archetype with a Death core. Primary school: Death, for the drains (Death Touch, Death Ray), the health-for-focus trade (Tap Soul) and Death Shield, which converts physical damage taken into health. Support: Blades or Bludgeon for the weapon strikes, Shield for Shield Bash and Dig In, and Heavy Armor for SotA's player taunts, Taunt (an area aggro pulse with a fixed radius) and Provoking Shout (a second aggro skill with a Focus cost). Chaos lends one glyph, Chaotic Backdraft, as the pull.
Specialize in Death and Blades. You have exactly two specialization slots and only the schools in them pay out; slotting a school and training its Specialization skill are separate steps, the skill bought from a trainer and the slot set at any trainer or Oracle Confirmatory with no lock-in. A specialized school gets about 1.3 % mastery per Specialization level and one extra deck copy of its glyphs. A specialized magic school also gains up to 16 points of attunement at mastery 80, and hostile spell damage scales with the attunement gap to the target, so Death in a slot is what makes the drains hit. Death plus Blades is not among the five pair names Catnip has confirmed. If holding crowds matters more than damage, Heavy Armor can take the Blades slot: its Specialization gives Taunt a chance of a second pulse on up to five targets, 25 % at Specialization 80.
Threat in SotA comes mostly from damage: a quarter point per point dealt plus a flat 5 per landed hit, while healing someone else is worth about a sixteenth of a point per point. A drain is damage, so Death Touch and Death Ray build threat while they heal you, and half of every threat event you generate also lands on every other hostile that can see you. Taunt and Provoking Shout are the top-up for when a damage dealer gets ahead.
A starting deck shape; more copies unlock as the skill levels, and the last copy needs the school specialization, which is why Death and Blades carry the multiples.
Death Touch x3
Death Ray x2
Thrust x2
Shield Bash x2
Crushing Blow
Death Shield
Tap Soul
Chaotic Backdraft
Summon Skeleton
Sacrifice, a combo glyph; the Necromancer post shows how it forms
Taunt
Provoking Shout
There is no maximum deck size; the minimum rises with your character to 23 glyphs and a short deck is padded with blank Slugs. Lock Death Shield and Taunt: in many schools a locked slot has a shorter cooldown than the drawn card. You have one pet slot, and a summon draws on your maximum Focus while it is out.
Gear is plate, a shield and a sword. Choose Link What I Am Wearing on the deck and the set equips with it whenever it is in your inventory; the Heavy Armor buff ends if a swap removes the plate. Plate slows Death spells and raises their focus cost, at half the penalty Air spells pay; the FAQ has the numbers, and Tap Soul is how you cover the focus.
No deck code yet. Codes are game-generated and travel with Share Deck and Import Deck; we will add one when the site's deck planner ships.

Leveling path
Skills grow as you use them, and each level spends from your adventuring pool, so the order below is what to set to Training first. You start with 25,000 experience in each pool, experience is permanently doubled, and there is no hourly ceiling. Right-click a skill for Training, Not Training, Train to Level or Unlearning; a skill that is not training gains nothing. Exact costs per level are in the site's XP planner.
First, Death Touch, Thrust and Shield Bash. Death Touch is the class: its damage is threat and its heal keeps you up. Leave the rest Not Training.
Second, Death Ray, Death Shield and Tap Soul, then Taunt and Provoking Shout. Death Shield stands in for both Auras, Tap Soul feeds the focus that plate makes expensive, and the Heavy Armor pair is for when a damage dealer gets ahead.
Third, Crushing Blow, Chaotic Backdraft and Summon Skeleton, and buy Death Specialization and Blades Specialization from a trainer for the extra deck copy, the mastery bonus and, for Death, the attunement. Every skill caps at 200, Specialization included; a realistic specialization target is 100.
Nothing here is permanent. Unlearning returns 100 % of the experience to your pool, slowly on each award or instantly with an Obsidian Item of Unlearning. Dying never removes experience from a skill. Battle Fatigue starts at adventurer level 80.
What Shroud of the Avatar does not have
The pet-sacrifice system is the real gap. Nothing in SotA spends a pet: Sacrificial Barrier maps to nothing, and Wreath of Souls only reaches Immolation, a damage shield that costs no pet. The Soul Remnant siphon is gone too; Summon Skeleton wants a bought reagent, and Siphoning Slash's kill-window trick has no SotA version. The Unholy Pact, a bonus that switches on below 25 % health, has no equivalent, which is why both Auras land as partial. The fear lines, Feign Death, Invisibility versus Undead and Lull the Dead map to nothing, and Profane Study is not in either game today. What SotA adds is the deck swap: a built deck can be equipped in combat for a Focus cost, so the same character can carry a Necromancer deck for pet play and switch mid-fight.
FAQ
Can I switch to another build later?
Yes. You change the two specialization slots at any skill trainer or Oracle Confirmatory, with no experience cost and no lock-in; decks and glyph counts update at once. Unlearning a skill returns 100 % of its experience to your pool, slowly over time or instantly with an Obsidian Item of Unlearning, and a town Oracle gives a free ten-minute instant window on request.
Do I need the pet?
No. In M&M the pet matters because you sacrifice it; nothing in SotA spends it, so Summon Skeleton is optional. You have one pet slot, and a summon draws on your maximum Focus while it is out, a stronger one costing more. If you want that Focus for Death Touch, leave the skeleton out.
Can I cast Death spells in plate?
Yes, at a price. Worn armor slows Air spells and raises their focus cost, and Death spells pay half of that penalty: full plate is about 46 % on Blink, so expect roughly half that on a Death glyph. The tooltip shows the extra, and Tap Soul trades health for the focus. Fire pays the same half as Death; the other schools pay nothing.
How do I hold a creature with drains instead of a taunt?
Damage is most of threat: a quarter point per point dealt and a flat 5 per hit (10 from behind), and a drain counts as damage. The creature re-pays its current target 100 points a second, decaying to 25 after 37 seconds, so peeling a target takes about 400 extra damage fresh and about 100 once the fight settles. Keep Death Touch cycling, hold Taunt and Provoking Shout for that moment, and ask the damage dealer to carry Escape.
The hub lists every Monsters & Memories class in Shroud of the Avatar; the Necromancer post is live and shares the Death core, and the Paladin is the other heavy-armor post in this wave; live skill data is on combat records. Mechanics verified against Catnip Games' work log and patch notes as of October 2026; the balance pass across 200+ skills is still running, so numbers can move.
