Does Shroud of the Avatar Have Classes?
No. Shroud of the Avatar doesn't lock you into a class at character creation. Instead, you build your character from a shared skill tree, mixing combat, magic, and crafting however you want.
If you're coming from a game where you pick Warrior, Mage, or Rogue on day one, that's the main thing to unlearn here.
How the skill tree system works
Every avatar draws from the same pool of skill trees rather than a fixed class list. Broadly, the trees fall into a few groups:
- Combat trees (melee weapons, archery, and related fighting skills)
- Magic trees (the different schools of spellcasting)
- Crafting and life trees (gathering, crafting, and other non-combat skills)
You can put points into any combination of these. There's no gate that says "only mages can learn fire magic" or "only warriors can use swords." Mixing a magic tree with a combat tree, or stacking two combat trees together, is a normal build, not an exploit.
Respeccing is also low-stakes. If you put points somewhere and later decide you don't like the build, you're not stuck with that choice for the rest of the game.
"Build archetypes" players converge on
Because nothing stops you from mixing trees, players have settled into some common combinations on their own. A few you'll see mentioned a lot:
- Battle mage: melee combat paired with a magic tree for burst damage or crowd control
- Ranger-tamer: archery paired with pet or taming skills
- Bard-healer: support magic paired with buffs or crowd-control effects
These aren't official classes. They're just patterns experienced players have found work well, and nothing stops you from inventing your own.
How to start as a new player
You don't need to map out your whole build before you start playing. A simpler approach:
- Pick one combat tree you enjoy (melee or ranged)
- Pick one magic or crafting tree to pair with it
- Put points into both as you level, see what feels good, and adjust later
Two or three trees is plenty to start. You can always add more once you have a feel for how your current skills play.
