Smarter Creatures, Deeper Combat, and New Ways to Rest

By admin · 8/26/2026

Today brought a major leap in how creatures behave and how players experience combat in Shroud of the Avatar. Creatures now react up to four times faster, with their decision-making engine finally tuned to work at the intended speed—no more sluggish reactions. This means enemies now respond more naturally to your movements, making encounters feel more dynamic and alive.

A key change: creatures that dodge or shrug off your attacks now actively try again instead of just standing still. If they lose their footing or can’t reach you, they’ll pause briefly to reposition, rather than continuing to take damage without effort. This makes combat feel more realistic and less like a stalemate.

For solo players, we’ve added offline difficulty settings—Easy, Medium, Hard, Challenging, and Impossible—scaling enemy levels from 50% to 150% of your own. Hard remains the default, preserving the original experience, but now you can adjust the challenge to match your playstyle.

We’ve also made enemies more strategic. Now, wounded animals and humanoid foes can break off and run, re-evaluating their tactics mid-fight—720 creatures now have this ability, up from just seven. Area attacks like trolls’ ground pound or dragons’ tail sweeps are now used when appropriate, and spellcasters visibly show a cast bar with the spell name. Hit a caster hard enough (more than 6% of their health in one hit), and you can interrupt their spell—especially effective with Crushing Blow or Body Slam. They’ll need five seconds to recover before they can cast again.

Combat weariness is now a real factor: your Vigor bar drains when fighting with weapons drawn, and only during active combat. Bards and towns restore it, and the bar is now visible under your health and focus. It’s been tuned so it empties over an hour, with bards able to see the party’s collective Vigor.

Finally, control point battles now have a satisfying arc: waves grow stronger, and losing at wave 11 or deeper earns you a public shoutout. And for those who love crafting and decorating, wine crates and wine presses are now craftable Carpentry items.

The world feels more alive—and your choices matter more than ever.
