Monsters and Memories Spellblade in Shroud of the Avatar
Swordplay and sorcery from the same hands, with blinks. How to rebuild the M&M Spellblade in Shroud of the Avatar: schools, deck and specialization.
This post is for players who fought as a Spellblade in Monsters & Memories and want the same mix of steel and spells in SotA. It is part of every Monsters & Memories class in Shroud of the Avatar. If SotA is new to you, read the character creation guide and the deck building guide first.
SotA has no classes. It has 21 skill schools and two specialization slots, and what players call a class is a deck plus a specialization pair. See the classes explainer. The Spellblade translates well: SotA already has a fire weapon buff, a blink and Air spells that match Discharge and Static Field.
What the Spellblade is in Monsters & Memories
The Spellblade is the duelist of Monsters & Memories who fights with a sword in one hand and magic in the other. Infusions charge the weapon, and the class controls the space around it with debuffs, short teleports toward and away from enemies, and roots that pin a target on its own. The class blurb says anyone who faces a Spellblade one on one will lose the upper hand. Six races can play one: Deep Dwarf, Deep Elf, Dwarf, Gnome, High Elf and Human.
The official deep dive was the first post in the class rework series, and it warns that details may change before beta. The developers say older versions leaned on lucky procs or on flat damage per swing that favored fast weapons, and left the player few real choices. The old Unstable Barrier, which tied your damage to stealing hits from the tank, is now Kinetic Ward, a purely defensive spell. The new kit is built on infusions: stance-like weapon buffs whose procs deal damage often and add a second effect less often. Solo, the deep dive has you soften a target with Arcane Spear before closing to melee. In a group, procs and Infused Slash carry the damage, with Arcane Spear, Discharge or a conducted Arcane Infusion woven in.
Infusions
Arcane Infusion: melee hits can deal Magic Damage and, less often, apply Arcane Frailty, which lowers the target's Magic Resistance. Makes Arcane Spear cheaper. Conducted, it detonates on the target for Magic Damage.
Electric Infusion: melee hits can deal Electric Damage and, less often, stun. Makes Discharge cheaper. Conducted, it arcs through the target and on to another, damaging and stunning.
Telekinetic Infusion: melee hits can deal Physical Damage and, less often, trigger Kinetic Siphon, which takes Movement Speed and Agility from the target and gives them to you. Makes Kinetic Ward cheaper. Conducted, it knocks the target back and immobilizes it.
Conduit: turns the current infusion into a spell of its type, then puts that infusion on a long cooldown and the others on a short one.
Offense
Infused Slash: the standard attack; weapon damage plus extra damage from the current infusion.
Arcane Spear: ranged Magic Damage; the pull, and a staple attack while Arcane Infusion lowers its cost.
Discharge: short-range Electric Damage.
Maelstrom: a high-level offensive cooldown that raises Attack Speed and the chance of infusion effects.
Defense
Kinetic Ward: raises Armor Class and absorbs damage; scales with Intelligence.
Deflection: a stance that greatly raises Parry chance; every parried attack fires your infusion effect.
Damage fields
Implosion: lowers the target's Block, Dodge and Parry chance, then implodes when it expires for Physical Damage to the target and anything near it.
Static Field: a field at your feet that deals Electric Damage over time.
Mobility
Phase Strike: the gap closer; teleports you behind the target for weapon damage, fires your infusion effect and clears stuns and immobilize effects. Works while you are stunned or immobilized.
Seclusion: at melee range, lowers your threat on the target, immobilizes it and teleports you a short way off.
Group buff
Aura of the Arcane: raises the group's Intelligence and Spell Damage.
The Shroud of the Avatar translation
The Spellblade maps onto the Hybrid Battlemage archetype; see the Battlemage build in the archetype library. Primary schools: Blades for the weapon work and Air for the spells. Support: Fire for Ignite Weapon, Chaos for Chaos Bolt, and Focus, which has no glyph in the deck below. The deck also borrows single glyphs from Moon (Night Step), Earth (Shield of Crystal and Root) and Tactics (Parry).
Specialize in Blades and Air. You hold exactly two specialization slots, and only the schools in them pay out. Slotting a school and training its Specialization skill are separate steps: you buy the skill from a trainer, and you set the slot at any trainer or Oracle Confirmatory with no lock-in. A specialized school gets about 1.3 % mastery per Specialization level and one extra deck copy of its glyphs. Blades carries the melee multiples, Thrust x3 and Riposte. Air carries six glyphs: Lightning x2, Discharge x2, Blink and Lightning Storm. Air is a magic school, so a slot there also gives up to 16 attunement at mastery 80, and hostile spell damage scales with the attunement gap between you and the target. Every pair has a name in game; Blades plus Air is not among the five Catnip has confirmed.
The core loop is Infused Slash rebuilt. Keep Ignite Weapon up, which adds fire damage to your weapon and a fire resistance debuff to the target, and attack with Thrust. Lightning opens from range, Discharge hits everything around you, and Lightning Storm is your Static Field. For Seclusion, Root the target and Blink away. Night Step is your Phase Strike: it teleports you to the target, and behind it while the moon is up. Parry followed by Riposte stands in for Deflection.
A starting deck shape; more copies unlock as the skill levels, and the last copy needs the school specialization.
Thrust x3
Ignite Weapon x2
Lightning x2
Discharge x2
Chaos Bolt
Night Step
Blink
Parry
Riposte
Shield of Crystal
Lightning Storm
Root
That is 17 glyphs. There is no maximum deck size, but the minimum rises with your character to 23 and a short deck is padded with blank Slugs, so add copies as they unlock. Leave Thrust and Lightning unlocked on the bar: matching unlocked glyphs stack, and some glyphs combine into combos. Holding a stack and spending it when it counts is as close as SotA comes to Conduit.
Gear is where the hybrid pays. Worn armor slows Air spells and raises their focus cost: on Blink, full plate adds about 46 %, chain about 27 %, leather 14 % and cloth nothing. Fire spells such as Ignite Weapon take half that, and your Chaos, Moon and Earth glyphs are unaffected. Leather is the usual compromise, and the spell tooltip shows what your armor adds. Choose Link What I Am Wearing on the deck, and equipping the deck puts that set on whenever it is in your inventory.
No deck code yet. Deck codes are generated by the game and move between players with Share Deck and Import Deck; we will add one when the site's deck planner ships.

M&M systems with no SotA equivalent: none in this kit; the series-wide list (underwater breathing, hunger, corpse runs, bind points) has no Spellblade ability on it.
Leveling path
Skills grow as you use them, and each level spends from your adventuring pool. You start with 25,000 experience in each pool, experience is permanently doubled, and there is no hourly ceiling. Right-click a skill to set Training, Not Training, Train to Level or Unlearning. A skill that is not training gains nothing, so keep the training list short and widen it in steps. The XP planner shows what each level costs.
First, Thrust, Ignite Weapon and Lightning. That is Infused Slash plus the ranged opener the deep dive suggests for solo play.
Second, Discharge, Lightning Storm, Blink and Root. They add the area damage and the root-and-blink move that replaces Seclusion.
Third, Parry, Riposte, Shield of Crystal, Night Step and Chaos Bolt, then buy Blade Specialization and Air Magic Specialization from a trainer. They bring the mastery bonus, the last deck copy and, for Air, the attunement. Both cap at 200; a realistic target is 100.
Nothing here is permanent. Unlearning returns 100 % of the experience to your pool, and dying never removes experience from a skill. Battle Fatigue starts at adventurer level 80.
What Shroud of the Avatar does not have
No row lands on none, but five are partial, and most of them trace back to one gap: SotA has no infusion system. Ignite Weapon is the only weapon buff in the build and it is fire, so the electric and telekinetic procs become separate casts or a combo. Kinetic Siphon steals nothing; Hamstring only slows the target and gives you a short Dexterity buff. Deflection's parries trigger nothing by themselves, and Riposte after a parry is the payoff. Implosion's avoidance debuff exists only on Shield Bash with Shield specialized, which this build does not use. Aura of the Arcane shrinks to Enlightenment, a self buff. Seclusion keeps the root and the teleport but loses its threat drop; Escape and Cocoon of Night shed threat in SotA, but neither is in this deck. What SotA adds is a Discharge that hits everything around you with a chance to stun.
FAQ
Can I switch to another build later?
Yes. You change the two specialization slots at any skill trainer or Oracle Confirmatory, with no experience cost and no lock-in, and your decks update at once. Unlearning a skill returns 100 % of its experience to your pool, slowly on each award or instantly with an Obsidian Item of Unlearning. A town Oracle also opens a free ten-minute window for an instant unlearn.
Can I wear plate as a Spellblade?
You can, and your Air spells will pay for it. Worn armor slows Air spells and raises their focus cost, about 46 % on Blink in full plate against 14 % in leather. Fire spells take half the penalty and the other schools take none, so Root, Night Step and Chaos Bolt cast the same in any armor.
Why Air and not Fire as the second specialization?
Air holds six glyphs in this deck and Fire holds two. A specialized magic school gains up to 16 attunement at mastery 80, and spell damage scales with the attunement gap, so that bonus is worth more on the school you cast most.
Does Night Step always put me behind the target?
Only while the moon is up. Moonlight follows the moon's own seven-hour orbit and is up half the time whatever the hour, so a dark sky is no guarantee. With the moon down, Night Step still takes you to the target.
The hub lists every Monsters & Memories class in Shroud of the Avatar. For another melee build with a magic school in a slot, read the Shadow Knight; for melee without a weapon, the Monk. Live skill data is on combat records. Mechanics verified against Catnip Games' work log and patch notes as of October 2026; the balance pass across 200+ skills is still running, so numbers can move.
